UCSF Pediatric Pulmonary Center

Innovating leadership in interdisciplinary child healthcare

Introduction

Welcome to the new website for the University of California, San Francisco Pediatric Pulmonary Center!

Pediatric Pulmonary Centers (PPCs) first came into existence in 1967 as interdisciplinary teams of physicians, nurses, and social workers providing specialized care to infants with respiratory conditions; respiratory therapists and dietitians later joined. In 1973, the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau assumed oversight and support of the PPCs, and the focus shifted from providing specialized care to addressing comprehensive, coordinated care.

UCSF is one of six national PPCs serving as models of excellence in interdisciplinary training, systems integration, and research. Each PPC program is unique, but all have common objectives.

  • Provide interdisciplinary leadership training at the graduate and post-graduate levels in pediatric pulmonary medicine, nursing, nutrition, social work, pharmacy, and respiratory care
  • Engage with families as full partners to support family-centered practice, policies, and research
  • Increase access to health services through innovative methods, such as telehealth, collaborative systems of care, and distance-learning modalities
  • Provide technical assistance, consultation, continuing education, and subject matter expertise to facilitate academic-practice partnerships
  • Support diverse and underrepresented trainees and faculty, and increase the cultural competence and skills of trainees and faculty to address health disparities in underserved communities

PPC trainees are part of a national network of training programs that include thousands of individuals who work to make a difference for infants, children, and youth with chronic respiratory and sleep-related conditions and their families.
